Watch Your Tongue!
God's Word declares that the words people use have tremendous consequences. While good speech is both commanded and commended, evil speech is condemned in the harshest of terms. Our words are merely a reflection of what exists in our heart:
"...for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks... but I say to you that every idle word that men may speak, they shall give account for in the day of judgment."
MATTHEW 12:34-36
" But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile (pollute) a man. " MATTHEW 15:18
Top on the list of importance in our speech is the reverent treatment of the name of GOD.
EXODUS 20:7
" You shall not take the name of the Lord your GOD in vain (uselessly), for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain."
The Ten Commandments are listed in the order of their importance to God - making misuse of His name worse than murder, theft and adultery!
PROFANITY (Greek BEBELOS " To cross the threshold of evil") 1 Timothy 6:20 "...avoiding profane and vain babblings..."
BLASPHEMY (Greek BLASPHEMEO " To impiously defame, revile") Colossians 3:8 ...put off all these...blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth"
CORRUPT COMMUNICATION (Greek SAPROS "Putrefied, rotten, worthless") Ephesians 4:29 "Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth..."
SWEARING (Greek OMNUO " To make or declare an oath") Matthew 5:34 "...swear not at all..."
CURSING (Greek KATARAOMAI " To revile, shun as evil, doom to destruction")
Romans 12:14 "...bless, and curse not."
It is obvious from the Word of God that He takes very seriously every word we say, and will hold us accountable for our words, unless we are forgiven by His grace and mercy in Jesus Christ. Are you? Don't die guilty!
"For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it."
James 2:10
